Palm Springs, CA Dan Bass, executive director of Jewish Family Service of the Desert, was recently presented with an honorary doctorate in Jewish Communal Service from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Los Angeles.
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is the intellectual, academic, spiritual, and professional leadership development center of Reform Judaism. Founded in 1875, the Hebrew Union College is the nation's oldest institution of higher Jewish education preparing men and women for careers of service as rabbis, cantors, educators and communal professionals.
Honorary Doctorates were presented by the college to selected students from the school who graduated at least 25 years ago. The college chose alums with exemplary service who have contributed greatly to their communities and enhanced Jewish life.
“Hebrew Union College was honored to give Dan the doctorate for his years of service and commitment to the Jewish people. It’s a tribute to him, but it is also a statement about the community that has allowed him to expand his career and to succeed,” said Steven Windmueller, dean of HUC-JIR, LA.
The honor bestowed upon Dan was for 25 years of charitable service. Coincidentally, Jewish Family Service of the Desert just celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Twenty-five seems to be a number of good fortune for Dan Bass.
Dan Bass has led Jewish Family Service of the Desert since 1994. Before joining JFS, he was assistant director of Jewish and Children’s Service of Long Beach, CA. He served Jewish Family Service of Orange County as a staff counselor, coordinator of clinical services and finally director of professional services. He has also been a therapist in private practice. Dan holds a master’s degree in social work and in Jewish communal service, and is a California licensed clinical social worker and a diplomat in clinical social work.
