WHAT: JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE REACHES OUTDURING HIGH HOLIDAYS

An opportunity to reach out to members of the community who may be isolated and possibly in need of a spiritual connection.


(Palm Springs, CA, September 25, 2008) – During the Jewish High Holidays, Jewish Family Service of the Desert, in collaboration with Jewish Federation of Palm Springs and the Desert Area, is reaching out to members of the community who may be isolated and possibly in need of a spiritual connection.

JFS has already sent 115 High Holiday cards to 14 assisted living facilities and nursing homes in the Coachella Valley. The activity directors at each facility will distribute the cards to the Jewish residents at their locations.

JFS is also organizing High Holiday services for the residents of Desert Hot Springs, who do not have a synagogue. Tickets are $10 per person for all four services, which will be held at Wiefel Chapel at the corner of Pierson and Cactus, 66272 Pierson Blvd., Desert Hot Springs.

All services will be lead by Meredith Cahn, a third year rabbinic student at the Academy for Jewish Religion, California in Los Angeles. Cahn is an active leader in her synagogue in Marin as well as a public health professional who assists counties and agencies tend to the health needs of their most vulnerable.

About Jewish High Holidays: The Jewish High Holy Days are observed during the 10 day period between the first day (Rosh Hashanah) and the 10th day (Yom Kippur) of Tishri, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated the first and second days of Tishri. It is a time of family gatherings, special meals and sweet tasting foods. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn day of the Jewish year and is observed on the tenth day of Tishri. It is a day of fasting, reflection and prayers.
