Passover Seder Brings Families Together in Desert Hot Springs
(Desert Hot Springs, CA, April 15, 2008) – Jewish Family Service of the Desert, The Jewish Federation of Palm Springs and Desert Area and Desert Synagogue/Kehillat HaMidbar are holding a traditional Passover Seder for the residents of Desert Hot Springs at the Desert Hot Springs Senior Center beginning at 6 p.m.
The Passover Seder is Thursday, April 24 at 6 p.m. at the Desert Hot Springs Senior Center, 11-777 West Drive. Cost is $15 for adults, $10 for children, children under 5 are free. Please RSVP to Linda Zweig at 760-325-4088 or email lzweig@jfsdesert.org.
The Passover Seder is a Jewish ritual feast held on the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover. Traditionally families gather around the table on the night of Passover to read the Haggadah, the story of the Israelite exodus from Egypt. Seder customs include drinking of wine, eating matza and partaking of symbolic foods placed on the Passover Seder Plate. Six specific items are placed on the Seder Plate including bitter herbs, symbolizing the bitterness and harshness of the slavery which the Jews endured in Ancient Egypt, as well as a sweet, brown mixture, representing the mortar used by the Jewish slaves to build the storehouses of Egypt. The Seder is very ritualistic and symbolic, and often takes hours to complete, during which time a fellowship and unity is built as the older generations pass on the beliefs and traditions to the younger generations.
